The Make You Movement Provides Financial Support For Organizations Dedicated To Helping Disenfranchised Youth And Survivors Of Sexual Trauma And Domestic Abuse
Toronto, ON (July 9, 2024) – The Canadian Country Music Association® (CCMA®) Board of Directors and the CCMA are proud to announce Lindsay Ell as the 2024 recipient of the Gary Slaight Music Humanitarian Award, honouring the multiple CCMA Award winner and Platinum-certified artist for her remarkable achievements with The Make You Movement charitable fund, in addition to her outstanding advocacy work and support for sexual assault survivors and the LGBTQ2SIA+ community. Awarded annually, the Gary Slaight Music Humanitarian Award recognizes an individual(s) and/or event(s) that have made an outstanding contribution of time and energy in the support of humanitarian causes through country music.
After bravely coming forward with news of her own sexual assault with the 2020 release of “make you”, Ell launched The Make You Movement, a charitable fund dedicated to raising money for aid organizations providing support for disenfranchised youth, specifically focussing on survivors of sexual trauma and domestic abuse. With Ell galvanizing friends and fans from all over the world to contribute, the fund has received donations in excess of $33k and the Community Fund of Middle Tennessee, which manages The Make You Movement, recently confirmed that her international giving ranks among the highest of their 1600+ donors.
Ell’s commitment to advocacy extends to her long-time support of the Nashville Sexual Assault Centre, where she recently spoke on behalf of the organization’s Safe Tracks Bystander Intervention Training program, launched in 2023 and designed specifically for the music industry. She continues to use her platform and celebrity to boost donation opportunities through her appearances, spending time in Calgary working with the Woods Homes Foundation, and making significant personal financial contributions to Rainbow Railroad and The Glenn Gould Foundation, in addition to working with organizations like RAINN and Youth For Tomorrow to raise much needed funds.
Additionally in the music space, Ell has worked with The CMA Foundation as an Artist Ambassador, ACM Lifting Lives, Notes for Notes and St. Jude, specifically the hospital’s St. Jude Country Cares program.
The CCMA Award of Achievement is named in recognition of generous donations made by the Slaight Music Foundation. The 2024 Slaight Music Humanitarian Award will be presented to Lindsay Ell during a private industry event as part of Country Music Week 2024, taking place September 11-14 in Edmonton, AB. The Canadian Country Music Association® (CCMA®) announced today that Country Music Week 2023, which was proudly hosted in the City of Hamilton for the seventh time in 2023 and delivered $11.2 million in economic activity to the Province of Ontario and City of Hamilton, an increase of $2 million from the $9.2 million previously recorded in 2018.
